Ethanol is an organic compound whose standard name is Ethyl alcohol. It is the second in the list of base alcohols after methanol. Recently it has grown really popular due to it's use as a biofuel. Well the question is how it can be used as a biofuel when it is an alcohol?
You see biofuel is some thing which can be extracted form bio mass or simply organic matter and then used as fuel. Ethanol has its common use in beverages but now it has much more useful purpose that is, to provide a renewable source of energy. Ethanol is growing popular because it is very cheap to manufacture and can be obtained form common crops like sugar cane and corn.
The ethanol based engine are different from the conventional gasoline engine and require a different ratio for compression in the cylinders. Although it is cheaper than gasoline yet it burns a little more than what gasoline can achieve at lower consumption rates.
Ethanol is also used as petrol enhancer in the production of high octane fuels. Usually 10% ethanol is added in petrol to increase its octane number to a prescribed value. Currently Brazil is the largest country running on ethanol based fuel.
