What Are Quantum Computers

January 23rd 2010 20:19

Recently there has been much talk about the limitations of present day computer technology. Although new modern computers are emerging every time with some thing new and with much more power and speed. But all this is still based on the convetional silicon based technology. Which scientists think will one days saturate.

This just something that is their in every technology and scientists have to find a new alternative to meet the increasing needs of mankind. This problem of massive computational power had already been looked upon much earlier when scientist found the need of such power which could replace the large super computers already in use.

It is true that even the present day super computers cannot deliver enough power to calculate certain scientific problems. All this lead to the research and development of Quantum computers. Although this technology is still under research but scientists hope for a better future.

But what Quantum computers really are? To understand Quantum computer you should know what is Quantum mechanics and to do that you must know your physics really well. The entire mechanism of Quantum computer is based on certain phenomenons with in the atom.

And this is studied under Quantum mechanics. These things happening with in the atom actually can be used to store data in quantum bits and that to in an atomics scale. Presently we employ a small circuit with in an IC to do this. So one can imagine that doing the same thing on an atomic scale will drastically reduce the size of our computers.

Also taking the computational mechanism to the most basic level of matter will greatly increase the speed of computer allowing us to revelutionize everything. Scientists have developed some basic quantum computers but there are still many years before anything practical could be developed. However we can still hope to see anything like that in our lives.

Interesting post, I'm always glad to learn of such things.
