Creative, for a while now, has been at the forefront of small speaker designs, and the TravelSound 400 is one of their best products they have developed so far. When listening to a pair of travel speakers, one often assumes that ease of use and portability will trump sound quality. The TravelSound 400 is no exception, and if you are one of those people who are looking for a compact design that will easily fit in any laptop case or a small backpack, this speaker set is a fine choice. If stellar sound quality is what you are after, however, you would do better with a proper 2.1 system. There are limitations to anything this small.

Take it out of the packaging and you see that the TravelSound is a solidly built, sleek unit with simply laid out buttons controlling the volume, power and ‘wide stereo effect’. Installation is simply to plug-in the supplied jack into the headphone socket of your laptop or MP3 Player, and you are ready to go.

Sound wise; this is an impressive set of amplified speakers considering their small size. They provide a nice, full sound covering all the notes from the highest high down to about 150Hz in the bass region just like the specifications say. 150Hz is not low bass by any means but the overall sound is surprisingly sharp, clear and the wide stereo effect leaves you wondering exactly how a unit this little unit can achieve it. The voices are focused and strings have real power. The two watts/channel (four watts total) is more than enough to fill the average room with sound – an average TV has the same amount of power. Although, bass is slightly disappointing - what can you expect from something this small.

I could not find anything in the market to compare it with, but, do believe that this will top out most of the offerings in the market.

Conclusion:
Creative’s TravelSound 400 is one of the better compact set of travel speakers with an “enhanced stereo” option that manages to make sound seem more spread out - albeit with very little low end.

Overall:
You would not be purchasing these speakers for their bombastic sound quality. It is meant for the always on-the-go types looking to take their tunes anywhere, making multimedia presentations or zoning out in places where bigger systems will be a headache to take along. That consumer alone will be pleased with the TravelSound 400; it is portable and attractive and meant for the road
