A pen drive is often called a jump drive. A jump drive was the invention of science fiction movies, this jump drive was actually introduced in a concept of traveling faster than light. Traveling faster than light is the biggest dream of scientists but till now it is merely a dream and is limited to only science fiction movies. The idea of a jump drive is to transport or 'teleport' and object from one point to another.
Lets now forget what fiction says and come back to the real world. A pen drive in real world is a gadget much famous by the name of USB flash drive. It has similar functions like the usual USB drives. It can store data in its and the PC and can retrieve it any time by connecting it into a USB port.
The reason why it is called a pen drive, is that it resembles like a pen and can easily fit into one's pocket. It can store all sorts of data once it has been plugged into a PC. You can easily store; spreadsheet,PDF files,mp3s,video files and much more. Now that they come with space crossing the Giga byte mark, a huge amount of data can be stored on them.
Pen drives are useful as they are highly compatible with all PC's using the same operating system. While many other files can still run on multiple operating systems. All that is needed in a PC is a USB port and there are no hassles what so ever in connecting this gadget.
