Elephant gun-Beirut is famous these days as song , a lot of people are in search of its lyrics and the song itself. But if you are here to do the same then, actually I have to disappoint you as this not really a music blog rather it is a technology blog. And don't wonder why I wrote the header as " Elephant Gun" because I am not referring to any song, rather in am talking about a famous 'gun' that was used to hunt animals.
I was actually supposed to write some thing new in technology, but this time I thought lets try and look into some abandoned piece of gadget which was once used. This was also a result of some technological development which was required in the dangerous, 'big-game hunting'. So as the name implies it means hunting some thing big, so this gun was used in hunting of Elephant,bears,big cats and other such big animals.
Europeans were its founder, they started to develop such a weapon as they started to move into Africa for hunting. This rifle is not a easy weapon to handle,it is extremely large and heavy for a single person and it can weigh 26kg, when empty.
Although the gun was of enormous size yet it faced penetration problems as bullets reached velocity of only up to 460m/s in those days. Due to this reason it was made large enough to provide enough power for stopping a charging animal, so it quite resembled like a canon.
Hunting wild animals is prohibited these days and these games in which such a massive firearm is used can only be played under proper licensing.
